
Death and Destruction in 3D proved yet again the most popular attraction across America this weekend with The Final Destination raking in an estimated $12.4 million, keeping at bay the new Sandra Bullock psycho-comedy All About Steve which stalked $11.2 million on 2251 blind dates. Gerard Butler’s sci-fi thriller Gamer coined a less-than-futuristic $9 million at 2502 virtual arcades, leaving Extract, the new Jason Bateman/Ben Affleck comedy to withdraw a meagre $4.2 million from 1611 flavor factories.
True to form, Labor Day Weekend served up a dogs dinner of new releases no-one was particularly interested in seeing, with the majority of moviegoers doubtless soaking up the last rays of summer instead. Dropping by 54.6%, The Final Destination, like My Bloody Valentine earlier this year, confirmed the growing appeal of live-action 3D - third-dimensional takings far exceeding those for flatorama - as well as establishing itself as a franchise that doesn’t need a psychic to forecast FD4 in the not-too-distant future.
